I hope that you are accessing the type of listening that allows you to hear the soundscape more easily. I have been practicing this all week, finding greater ease in my listening which has contributed to decreased fatigue overall.
The next step is adding your own sound into the soundscape. Do you find that all of your attention immediately diverts to hearing your sound? The quality? Resonance? Pitch? This is my experience. Listening in this narrow way takes muscular effort that diminishes your ability to access the movements you need for your sound.
Take a moment, allow the soundscape to be in your awareness. (do you notice I use the word “allow” a lot? It permits us to let go a bit, stop trying hard and get back to a natural state.) Without expectation, add your sound to the soundscape. I expect that some sounds in the soundscape will be drowned out. See if you can hear your sound in the broad context.
What is it like? Can you still hear your sound? Do you hear your sound any differently? Some people report they can hear more dimension to the sound they hear. This has been my experience. It was like listening to something 3D, rather than a 1D object. The key for me is bring “no expectation”. This is your basic sound, like vanilla ice cream. We can add the fixin’s in later.
Once you hear the basic sound, play around with varying tension in embouchure, hand, or varying air speed/volume, even how you stand.
This week, be curious about laying your sound into the soundscape. What is it like to not only listen this way but approach creating sound with this intention?
Be curious!
