“I’m not here to be right, I am here to get it right.” - Brené Brown
Listening to Brene Brown’s latest podcast episode this morning on my walk through the woods, she shared this quote. I immediately thought of my teaching, and that this perfectly describes the approach I take with every person with whom I work.
I have learned through my teaching, that each individual’s “right” is unique. I use my experience to help each person uncover their “right.” One’s “right” is always within the individual. It is often buried under well-intentioned guidance that was someone else’s “right.”
I lived this experience when a teacher told me exactly how every phrase should be played from articulation to dynamics. This was awkward and discouraging because it wasn’t my “right.” It squelched my creativity and agency.
This weekend, approach your playing, writing, painting, exercise, cooking (insert your activity) with the affirmation, “I’m not here to be right, I am here to get it right.”
Dive into the process, listen to your body, feel the ground, notice thoughts that emerge, ask yourself, “are they true?” Let go of misconceptions and embrace your “right.” Fully experience the moments in your activity. Sometimes the outcome won’t be exactly as planned, but there is learning that comes from these detours.
