What is your support network like? Who can you turn to for advice or insights on your playing? Your teacher? Colleagues? Musicians you don’t know?
Since August, I have been developing an almost magical support network. I didn’t plan it, I didn’t even expect it, it organically came together.
Through my network, I have realized that there are others who struggle with the same playing challenges as me. There are others who struggle with the same fears AND, there are others who have insights that have helped me to move forward. I don’t have to struggle alone. WOW!
When I left graduate school, I felt alone. I had a great group of friends, but being vulnerable was not an option. Admitting a weakness or fear. What would they think? Would they see that I was a fraud?
Over the past few months, I have experienced how easy it is to reach out, even to people I don’t know for insights. Nobody has turned me down, and my growth as a musician and human has been exponential.
I challenge you to reach out to someone for insights, even if you don’t know them. The worst that can happen is they say “no, I can’t.” Their response is not a comment on you, it is their response. Who knows what they have on their plate right now. Move on to another person.
Grow your network. We all want to be the best we can be. Being the best is not reserved for only some. It is out there for you. You never know who you will connect with or what else they may have to offer for you.
Be curious!
