Just Notice!
Since we began, we have been exploring intentionally becoming aware as we play using the senses. The cues have been aimed at getting you to notice as you play. When the senses are turned “on”, changes at the level of the central nervous system take place that allows you to move better.
Today, I invite you to be aware as you move through the day. Take each moment as an opportunity to intentionally investigate one of the senses. Here are some ideas…
Vision - as you look at anything, notice that you can focus on an object but you can also see the space around. As I type this, I can see the bushes blowing in the wind as well as the pencil cup to the right and my fingers moving around the keyboard.
Hearing - Listen to the soundscape as you talk with a friend or prepare food.
Tactile - Notice how your clothes feel today, notice how your feet touch the ground.
Movement - the kinesthetic senses allows you to feel movement from the inside. Notice how your breathing is moving today. Do certain tasks change the way you breathe?
Today is a day of simply noticing, of becoming familiar with the complex sensory information that is always available to us. With all of the hours we dedicate to playing, this can seem disorienting. Think of this as practicing away from your instrument. Just notice.
When you get to your instrument, do you notice more vividly?
