Resonance from First Sound
As I was making my first flute sounds of the day yesterday, it struck me that my idea of warming up has changed. No longer is it about traditional tone and technique, this time is about finding resonance, and awakening connections within my body that propel expression. Movement allows technical facility, dynamic range, and access to color in my tone.
In my first sounds, I am establishing a baseline for playing by diving deeply into the process of creating sound. Amazingly, these first sounds have so much resonance and color from the moment they begin.
Here is a glimpse into my process. Each step contributes to an expanding, inclusive awareness…
Find my base. I begin seated, so I locate the sitting bones, shift my weight a little allowing the spine to be responsive.
As I move gently, I become aware of my contact with the instrument and allow hands to soften into the metal.
Experience the arm movements of delivering the flute to my face.
Again, soften into the instrument.
As I blow air into the instrument, I tune into the movement of my ribs.
Allow my body to enjoy gentle, fluid motions
Notice the air passing through my lips
Feel the sound vibrations in the flute tube through my hands
Lastly, listen to the sound.
This entry into the day is a different mindset than logging tone and technique time. I find that if I start in the process of my craft it is easier to come back to it or even stay in it as I move through traditional tone and technique and then repertory.
This process-oriented rather than outcome-oriented. I am being curious throughout the process. Every day I feel a bit different, this takes it into account. I am also awakening the flexibility to adjust whatever I need rather than listening to sound and working backward. The process builds playing from the ground up rather which gives me access to a myriad of adjustments, this is the flexibility I want to enjoy as I perform.
Today, experience the process of making your first sounds. Observe and be engaged in the delightful movements that coordinate to bring music to life. Getting to know this foundation is something you will be able to access as you play, allowing yourself to be responsive and authentic its you play.
Be curious…
