As I was getting ready to play one of my favorite songs by the band, The Strokes was streaming through my speaker. Hearing the rhythmic guitar’s vigorous beat gave me an idea. Why not play scales using the Strokes as my metronome rather than a dull monotone metronome?
Each of The Strokes’ songs has a steady beat perfect for working on technique. Listening to their songs takes me back to Arthur Ashe Stadium in Flushing, NY where it was a beautiful night and a packed stadium danced and sang with them. This takes my energy level to rock star level and my scales beyond simply note and rhythmic accuracy.
For a new twist in your practice, explore your playlists. There is very likely a song that not only lights your fire but has a steady beat you can use to work on technique.
