This idea is one to take into the weekend - find opportunities to ‘Step Into The Shoes of The Beginner.’ I learn SO much every time I step into the unknown, challenging what I think I am capable of. This practice informs playing, gets you out of your comfort zone and into the shoes of the beginning learner.
Remember when associating a note of the staff with a finger combination was unfamiliar?
I do this by taking classes or joining a friend in some activity I haven’t done before. It can be as simple as making a loaf of bread or cooking without a recipe. Doing something you haven’t done before is a valuable experience throughout life.
My favorite experiences revolve around movement. I am fascinated, no I am in awe with movement and the human body and the process of learning to move differently. My fascination has taken me to exercise classes, NIA Dance, flying on the trapeze, silks, and most recently Parkour.Â
I have done things I never imagined I could or would do, i.e. flying upside down in a split (well sort of) 20+ feet in the air, scaling a 6+ft wall, you get the idea. In these experiences, I find teachers who break things down, help me understand how to build a movement in myself, and bring me to the foundation of learning - the process.
This weekend, go out and find something new to do. It will make this time a little more palatable as it informs your approach to playing, to living.
Be curious…
Perhaps I have sparked your interest in Parkour…. Good news they offer classes every day of the week, and your first one is FREE. The teachers break things down for every BODY. Check them out Parkour Generations. What do you have to lose? Think you are too old? I have news for you there are many movers older than I who can do amazing things.
