Upended

Life as we know it has been upended. We are learning remotely as we mourn the loss of gigs and concerts both for their collaborative nature and income. I have been thinking a lot about how can we use this time as musicians to grow, to become more authentic, and cultivate confidence. The question I want to help you answer is, “how can I reap the benefits of the time and space I now have to grow as a musician to build skills that will propel my playing and my teaching?” In other words, making lemonade out of lemons.
This is a challenge I am striving to help students in my classes as well as clients whom I work with to answer. I am going to post regularly about different ways to approach practice and playing that in a sense, will help upend your perspective to get you into the process of making music rather than simply judging the product. The process offers choices!
So here is your first cue…
What do you do to create sound? How do you physically make your musical sound? How do you change dynamics? How do you create different colors? As you practice today direct curiosity to answer these questions. You may also identify elements in your playing that don’t truly contribute to the creation of sound. Habits you may not realize you were doing that don’t yield a difference. Observe these elements too, but leave the judgment at the door, just notice.
We’ll check back in tomorrow and take this a step further. For now, be curious…
