A Few of My Favorite Things from Building the Phrase
Last week Drew Ricciardi and I led our “Building the Phrase” workshop. Over the course of 3 days and 9 hours, we guided participants to explore their playing from its foundation, movement.
These were some of my favorite things from BTP. I have linked past posts that relate to each idea.
Movement Practice: Music-making is the byproduct of movement practice. (A Movement Practice)
Resonance: Just like sound resonates in a room, movement resonates in the body if we allow it. Resonance in the body contributes to the resonance of sound. (Flexibility)
The How: Clarifying the ‘how’ of what you are doing is key to releasing the limiting tension of “trying to get it right” and moving to a place of unbridled expression. Body Mapping is a great way into clarity. (Dig into the ‘How’)
Push Your Movement Boundaries: To find expressive freedom, move in new ways. Playing habits are filled with movement patterns, some of which don’t serve our musical intention. (Bringing Legs to The Flexibility Party)
We are planning another Building the Phrase and some follow-ups for last week’s participants. Stay tuned for details.
